Jump rope-noose

2020

Throughout his career, Michelangelo Pistoletto has created art that engages directly with contemporary society and spurs questions that are not merely aesthetic but ethical as well. The present work, which may prompt strong reactions, revisits a subject that the artist introduced four decades earlier in his mirror painting Cappio (1973), created as Italy entered a tumultuous era known as the “years of lead” during which kidnappings, terrorism, and acts of politically motivated violence rocked the country. Confronting us with difficult subjects, including issues of liberty and confinement, life and death, Pistoletto challenges us to reconsider our core beliefs.
