LÉVY GORVY ANNOUNCES APPOINTMENT OF ANDREAS RUMBLER AS PARTNER AND PLANS FOR A NEW ZÜRICH OFFICE, OPENING NOVEMBER 2018
Dominique Lévy and Brett Gorvy, principals of Lévy Gorvy, announced today the formation of a new division to be based in Switzerland: Lévy Gorvy and Rumbler will be a special office in Zürich, in partnership with and under the direction of Andreas Rumbler, former Chairman of Christie’s Switzerland.
Opening in November 2018, the new Zürich office builds upon Lévy Gorvy’s dedication to providing highly specialized, bespoke private advisory services to collectors and institutions around the globe, and follows the establishment in September 2017 of Lévy Gorvy’s special office in Shanghai, China. Rumbler’s presence in Zurich will enable the gallery to deepen its existing relationships with leading collectors and clients in Switzerland, Germany, and across northern Europe, while fostering new relationships and working more closely with museums and cultural institutions throughout the region.
Rumbler joins Lévy Gorvy as an established and admired force in the art world. He was named Chairman of Christie’s Switzerland in 2010 after a tenure of nearly three decades at the international auction house. Rumbler ran Christie’s German operation from 2000 through 2010, and in his role as Deputy Chairman of the house’s Impressionist and Modern Department he worked on bringing to auction many notable international collections and masterworks.
He joined the Christie’s Print department in London in 1989, and quickly developed a passion for early 20th Century European avant-garde, particularly German Expressionism. Rumbler was instrumental in establishing Christie’s leadership in the German and Austrian art market, resulting in record prices for artists such as Schiele, Klimt, Kandinsky and Franz Marc, and culminating in the 2006 sale of Ernst Ludwig Kirchner’s Berliner Strassenszene (Berlin Street Scene) for a world record price of $38,096,000. Rumbler also negotiated restitution of this landmark work and continues to be a foremost advisor on restitution cases. He has secured and overseen many high-profile estate sales, including that of Swiss art connoisseur and museum founder Ernst Beyeler.
“We are looking forward to Andreas joining Lévy Gorvy in November,” said Dominique Lévy. “The formation of this partnership in Zürich reflects our commitment to Europe, and our collector-centric approach. Our New York and London galleries are the heart of Lévy Gorvy’s activities, dedicated to the representation of artists and estates, the curation of exceptional exhibitions, and the development of scholarly publications. Our new satellite in Zürich is intended to give our existing clients and new relationships access to an art advisory service that provides peerless personal service and assistance in their own region.”
“I’m delighted to be partnering with Dominique Lévy and Brett Gorvy, both such respected experts and leaders in the 20th century art market, to create a new enterprise focused on connoisseurship and the art of collecting,” said Andreas Rumbler. “It has been a tremendous experience to work with the Christie’s team over the past 28 years, and I look forward to carrying that experience forward, continuing to serve the great collectors and patrons in Switzerland, Germany, and the region.”
