Tom Wesselmann

An important figure of American Pop art, Tom Wesselmann made collages, paintings, and large-scale sculptures. Perhaps best known for his Great American Nudes series, this work is characterized by extreme tan lines, patriotic decor, and crude, cartoonish outlines. Born in Cincinnati, Ohio, in 1931, he enrolled at the University of Cincinnati to study psychology in the early 1950s. In 1953, he enlisted in the army, which is where he first began drawing cartoons. In 1954, he returned to the University to finish his degree, and later moved to New York to study art at the Cooper Union. Along with fellow artists Marc Ratliff and Jim Dine, Wesselmann co-founded the historic Judson Gallery, which famously exhibited artists such as Claes Oldenburg and Dan Flavin. During his lifetime Wesselmann showed at the Institute of Contemporary Art, Boston, and the Contemporary Art Center, Cincinnatti, among many other places. The artist passed away in 2005, and since then his work has been the subject of retrospective exhibitions at the Museo d’Arte Contemporanea Roma (MACRO) and The Montreal Museum of Fine Arts.
